I want to replace a spare tv, so not looking for high end. Just a decent smart tv with a good picture and won’t die on me within a year.

Is it opposite day or something?

Samsung 7000
TCL Class 4 or Class 5

Those are both solid models that meet your needs.

The Class 5 TCL offers good bang for the buck. The image quality for just a small price increase over Class 4 is worth it IMO.

Big discounts this weekend will be for LG and Samsung models.

I have a hisense. For $350 if and when it ever breaks no big deal.

Pro tip all TVs break.
Super pro tip, all TVs are high definition when you put your glasses on.

Quality vs Price

Should You Buy a Bigger TV or a “Better” TV Posted: 2/10/2024 11:01:18 AM EDT

Is it still next time impossible to find a specific actual width tv?
Diagonal width measurements aren't that helpful if you are looking for a specific width.

We have a Panasonic that has survived since about 2008. It has been outside year round in Alabama since 2019. Still works like a champ.

Also have a TCL that I won in a raffle at work back in 2018. It has been in my unconditioned, sawdust filled garage ever since with no issues. When the outdoor Panasonic goes, I'll probably replace it with a TCL.

We've had more trouble with two Samsungs. They turn themselves back on. Picture will temporarily go out occasionally.

I’ve had great luck with Samsung TVs, their kitchen appliances suck donkey balls.

Vizio makes quality hardware, but their software suuuuucks. Can’t even watch local TV (antenna) without going through their apps. One TV is so slow I can’t watch live sports through their interface.

Just tested my internet - 417 Mbps. Glitchy, laggy TV experience.

I've won the Samsung shit lottery. Purchased all new in box from Best buy.

Don't remember the model but it was 4-5 years ago. I had the LED blue spots on screen, same TV a board died on it. From what I read these were common issues at the time.

Computer monitor black screen, powered on but no display. Sent back to Samsung for firmware update. Fixed.

Current Samsung TV half the screen died 2 months after purchase. Covered under factory warranty, replaced with refurbished model. Wasn't happy about that but TV hasn't given me any issues in 2 years since.

Sound bar stopped working. Sent back to Samsung for repair. Firmware update. Fixed.

I'll never buy another Samsung TV.

Yeah, Visio is crap. But VIZIO . that's another thing entirely. I have two Vizios right now and they've been the best TVs we've owned. The 65" P-series in my den is golden, as is the cheaper model in the bedroom that almost matches it for picture quality.

The manufacturer will have the exact measurements. Best Buy also lists them. Once you find a TV that has the specific width you're looking for, that will be the TV size class that should universally fit. The bezels on today's TVs are almost non-existent.

Last 2 tvs are Samsung. 1st lasted 12 years and was still good when we replaced it with a larger screen Samsung. Absolutely ZERO problems with either.

My Hisense, going on 7 years has been great. Just got a TCL QLED and it's great as well.

Just bought a 65" from Costco. In their specs they told dimensions of tv on stand and no stand. Posted: 2/10/2024 12:05:40 PM EDT Quote History Quoted:

Avoid the ones that mandate you give up your privacy to get their GUI to work.

Have a look at the GUI too as it's pretty important as you're going to be interacting with it often unless you replace it with a streamer's.

Years ago I hated the GUI of the LG so much that I replaced it with a Samsung just to avoid it. LG was putting ads in the lower left-hand corner of their GUI and that was offensive. I didn't want my TV's GUI selling me Campbells Soup, it was just too much.

I have heard GD bitch about TCL.

All I can say is I have had three, they are all still going. My latest one is 65" that has the OLED or whatever type screen. It is an amazing TV. Picture is awesome.

My luck has been good.

I have purchased 3 vizio's, the all burned out in short order. My results may not be typical because I know several people who have had good luck with vizio.

I have a Hisense U8 class that has been great. I’m traditionally a Sony snob but I wouldn’t hesitate to get another Hisense.

Some of y’all just hate everything.

100% solid. Years of use, zero problems.

I have owned a TCL 55" in the house and a 42" TCL in the shop for over 6 years. Both have been great.

Posted: 2/10/2024 12:27:25 PM EDT

It might be worth noting whether your tv was purchased in store, or purchase onlined and shipped to you.

I won't have televisions shipped. I know what happens to them.

Even if they survive the journey, they are likely compromised.

Wow! For possibly the first time ever, FP does not NI!
I've owned (and still own) both TCL & Hisense and would recommend them to anyone looking for a budget tv w/decent picture quality.

Whatever you get, make sure it has multiple HDMI outlets.

The Samsung I got for my bedroom like a year ago only has two - which is a PIA to add/connect shit. Ironically, my old school Samsung (for the living room) that I had over like 10 years ago has Idk, like 5 HDMI outlets, multiple USB and other outlets - which I love.

You know you can look at the TV specs and get the width/length, etc? Posted: 2/10/2024 12:42:49 PM EDT

I haven't seen a smart tv os/UI that was worth a shit.

My 3 TV's have dedicated mini PCs connected to them. The small wireless keyboards for remotes are a little clunky at times but performance and ease of use is 100 times better and well worth it.

Obviously not ideal for everyone's budget but a cheap TV with a cheaper mini PC attached is about the same price for a slightly better TV.

Just my opinion.

Have had a Sceptre in my bedroom for almost 20 years used several times a week for several hours each use.
Have a new Sceptre in my living room, only 3 months old, but does what I need and looks good to me.
It replaced a 14 year old RCA that went out because of a power spike.

Mom has had a Sceptre for over 15 years with no issues.

Edit: note, these are all dumb tv's. I refuse to buy a "smart" tv.
The Sceptre I just bought is a 2018 model because nobody makes a dumb tv anymore.
I don't care that it is 6 year old tech, it is a 55" tv that cost me $225.

My sister bought a TLC smart tv a few years ago, it is almost unuseable now, there was an update on the software she did, and it takes over a minute from the time it is turned on till she can select an input (it defaults to TV, not HDMI, and can't find a way to change it). Switching between inputs is also very laggy, and the menu is horrible.
The display itself is still fine, just the software/hardware issues.
