Character and Athletics

CJ Moloney, M.Ed. has over 30 years' experience in various roles including coach, camp counselor, after school program coordinator, PK-12 educator, artist and musician. She currently teaches courses at the University of San Diego, and coaches Splash, a team of senior women basketball players. She co-authored a character education curriculum book for middle school students and a guide for middle school teachers, and has over 15 years of experience facilitating online discussions with educators throughout the country and around the world who are committed to positive social change.

Course Description

Discover the Importance of Character When Dealing with Student Athletes

In this course you will examine the relationship between character and athletics. You will explore ways to establish a culture of character, model positive leadership, foster ethical decision-making and promote equality in athletics. You will also enhance your personal philosophy of athletics, develop an athletic mission statement and create a cumulative final project with practical application to your current role as an athletic leader.

Throughout the course you will hear from three leaders of the University of San Diego community: Ed DeRoche, Director of the University of San Diego Character Education Resource Center; Marie Zidek, former USD Assistant Volleyball Coach; and Rich Hill, former USD Head Baseball Coach.

Number of Units: 2.0 graduate level extension credit(s) in semester hours

Who Should Attend: This course provides continuing education for athletic coaches and K-12 teachers who provide physical education, who want to gain a new perspective on coaching in the modern era.
